There are lots of Ostomy pouches in the market which come with Carbon filters, which are supposed to keep the pouches from ballooning, but this carbon filter also stops working by the end of day 2 as it get covered by stool.
Instead of buying expensive stoma bags with a carbon filter, one can buy the regular stoma bag & attach OstoCare OAV to it which is developed by VCARE Ostomy. Overall, high quality OAV is available at good price also the OAV doesn’t get clogged like the carbon filter.
Clean the front surface of your bag with a dry cloth or napkin.
Find an area nearer to the top side of the pouch to attach the OAV. Now, place the OAV on the pouch and gently lift it with your finger, making sure it doesn’t move from the place.
Remove the adhesive from OAV and stick the OAV on the pouch firmly. Let it stick/dry completely before use.
Once the OAV has securely bonded with the bag, pull the top where the OAV is attached down to the opening. Now, use a sterile pin/needle or a fresh tooth pick to make a hole in the bag through the OAV. Make sure the hole is big enough to let the air out.
Once the puncture/hole is made, the bag is ready for use.
My father was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on July 27th, 2019 at the age of 60. We right away decided to go ahead with the surgery, unaware that post-surgery he would have an Ileostomy for around 5-6 months. It was a shock for all of us & we didn’t know how to deal with it. But the promise of temporary stoma kept us all going. Unfortunately, we met with recurrence. Again with a heavy heart, we decided to go ahead with the surgery with an assurance of an ileostomy reversal later in the future.
For those who are wondering what an Ileostomy is, here’s a brief introduction. An ileostomy is an opening in the belly (abdominal wall) that’s made during surgery. This opening is called Stoma. The waste no longer comes out of the body through the rectum and anus, the digestive contents now leave the body through the stoma.
Having an ileostomy be it temporary or permanent, isn’t easy.
In less than 2 years, we faced recurrence for the third time, losing every hope of ever getting rid of an ileostomy.
After the first surgery, we were taught how to change, empty, and clean the bag, the frequency at which it needs to be changed, and other safety & precautions to be taken. At his age, emptying the pouch 12-15 times a day, sometimes, even more, used to be tiresome. Out of the fear of emptying the bag & not finding a clean washroom around, he would not travel to any place very far from home. It was saddening to see a sudden drop in his confidence. He started wearing longer shirts & stopped tucking his shirts to hide his bag. We could no longer see the man he used to be before.
Since 2019, we’ve had 3 surgeries, 6 recurrences & continuous chemotherapy, and targeted therapy for almost two years now.
In the case of Colostomy & Ileostomy, along with the feces, natural gas too gets routed to the pouch. The pouch needs to be emptied & cleaned, even if there is no or little stool but is full of gas. We were looking for something that would make it a little easy for him to travel, work & worry less about emptying the pouch. My dad would keep eating our heads to find a solution to help him with the ballooning issues. That’s when he came across the idea of an Ostomy Air Vent(OAV). It is easy to use with its two-way locking system, much safer and better. With the finger lift, you can easily remove the adhesive from the OAV and place it on the bag. With the help of a sterile pin/needle or a fresh toothpick puncture the top layer of the bag through the button big enough to let the air out. The OVA is ready to use.
Thanks to OAV, emptying the pouch has reduced from 15 times to 6-7 times per day only, viz. almost three times less. Although it varies based on the diet. Though he isn’t back to his original self, with the help of OAV, as he can burp on the go, he has started going back to his work, attending long meetings, traveling abroad, going for swims, going for long walks, etc. without worrying about the ballooning issues or prior planning washroom visits. Overall we are just thankful to our doctor for the ileostomy surgery, without that we wouldn’t have our father amongst us for this long.
